How Can hip Osteoarthritis In An Elderly Person Be Treated?

Hi, my dad, 80, has the severe hip osteoartritis. After suffering for 3 years and trying variety of treatments, we are thinking about hip replacement surgery. We are inclining to use epidural as Anastecia during the surgery. We were actually avoiding the surgery because we were afraid of the impact of general anastecia on memory loss. What is opinion about it?

Hello,

Older age is not a contraindication to hip replacement surgery. I do not think there is an upper chronological age beyond which patients should not be considered for total hip replacement.

Elderly patients undergoing elective hip replacement for either osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis have a greater life expectancy than average.

I agree with you that epidural anaesthesia is certainly a better choice for keeping the age and type of surgery in mind.

Regional anaesthesia seemingly improves perioperative outcomes in hip surgical patients.

Most studies concur on a positive outcome in overall mortality, thromboembolic events, blood loss and transfusion requirements.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care
